The Only Packing List You Need for a Ladakh Expedition

Ladakh's weather can swing from -5°C at a mountain pass at 7 a.m. to 25°C in the Nubra sand dunes by afternoon — often on the same day. Packing right is less about carrying more and more about carrying the right layers. Here's what actually goes in the panniers on every Safar Rides expedition.

Riding Gear (Non-Negotiable)

• A full-face helmet rated for the trip — no open-face helmets on high passes
• An armored riding jacket with a removable thermal liner
• Waterproof, insulated riding gloves (carry a thin pair for warm afternoons too)
• Ankle-high riding boots — sneakers won't survive river crossings or gravel
• Knee and elbow armor if your jacket or riding pants don't already include it

Layering System for -5°C Mornings to 25°C Afternoons

Think three layers, not one heavy jacket: a moisture-wicking thermal base layer, a fleece or light down mid-layer, and your armored riding jacket as the outer shell. You add or remove the mid-layer as the day heats up — you don't want to be stripping down to your base layer at Khardung La.

Documents to Carry (and Photocopy)

• Driving license and a government photo ID (Aadhaar or Passport)
• Vehicle RC, insurance, and PUC certificate — originals, not just photos
• Inner Line Permits for Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri (arranged in Leh)
• Printed hotel or homestay bookings for permit checkpoints that ask for an itinerary

Bike Tool Kit and Spares

• Basic tool roll, tyre repair kit, and a 12V tyre inflator
• Spare clutch/brake lever, a few extra fuses, and zip ties — they fix almost anything
• A tow rope — passes go quiet fast if someone's bike won't start

What Riders Always Overpack (Leave It Home)

• More than 3 days of regular clothing — you won't find laundry, wear the same riding gear daily
• Heavy gadgets or books you won't use with no signal for days at a stretch
• A second pair of riding boots — one good pair is enough
