At sea level, a cheap helmet and a hoodie might get you through a city commute. At 5,000 m on a gravel switchback, gear stops being a style choice and starts being the only thing between you and a bad day. This is the checklist we hand every rider before a Spiti or Ladakh departure.

Why "Any Helmet" Isn't Good Enough at Altitude

Cold reduces reaction time and concentration, UV exposure is far higher at altitude, and a fall on gravel or river-crossing rock is a very different impact than a fall on tarmac. Look for an ISI or DOT/ECE-rated full-face helmet with a clear and a tinted visor — you'll want both across a single day.

• Full-face helmet — rated, snug, with a scratch-free visor
• CE-armored riding jacket — shoulder, elbow, and back protection built in
• Waterproof insulated gloves — plus a thin pair for warmer afternoon riding
• Ankle-high riding boots — real ankle support, not sneakers or trekking shoes
• Moisture-wicking thermal base layer — worn under everything, every day

Protecting Against Sun, Dust and Wind — Not Just Cold

New riders over-pack for cold and under-pack for sun and dust. At altitude, UV exposure is intense even on cloudy days, and unpaved stretches through Nubra, Pang, or the Spiti riverbed throw up fine dust for hours.

• A buff or balaclava to seal the neck and lower face from dust and wind
• Riding goggles or wraparound sunglasses for when the visor fogs at altitude
• SPF 50 sunscreen and a proper lip balm — sunburn at 4,000 m is fast and brutal

Rain and River-Crossing Gear

Pack a compact rain suit that goes over your riding gear, not instead of it, and consider a dry bag for electronics — several stretches on both routes involve fording shallow streams where waterproof boots earn their price tag.

Renting Gear vs Buying

If this is your first high-altitude ride, it's fine to rent or borrow a jacket and boots before committing to a purchase — just don't compromise on helmet fit, since that's the one item that should always be your own.
